Sukarno
spent long periods of his childhood with his grandparents in the village of
Tulungagung, where he was exposed to the animism and mysticism of serene rural
Java. There he became a lifelong devotee of wayang, the puppet shadow plays
based on the Hindu epics, as animated and narrated by a master puppeteer, who
could hold an audience spellbound through an entire night. As a youth of 15,
Sukarno was sent to secondary school in Surabaya and to lodgings in the home
of Omar Said Tjokroaminoto, a prominent civic and religious figure.
Tjokroaminoto treated him as a cherished foster son and protégé, financed his
further education, and eventually married him off at age 20 to his own

He graduated from a native primary school in
1912, he was sent to Europeesche Lagere School (Dutch-primary school) in
Mojokerto. His father sent him to Surabaya in 1916 to attend a Hogere Burger
School (Dutch-college preparatory school's). In 1921, he began to study at the
Bandoeng Institute of Technology in Bandung. He studied civil engineering and

Ir. Soekarno
known as the first President of the Republic of Indonesia was born on June 6,
1901, in Surabaya, East Java. When he was born is called Koesno Sosrodihardjo.
His father named Raden Soekemi Sosrodihardjo and his mother Ida Ayu Nyoman Rai.
Soekarno spent long periods of his childhood with his grandparents in the
village of Tulungagung.
At an early age the
family moved to Modjokerto, where his father taught school. Sukarno's adequate
knowledge of Dutch made it possible for him to enter the European elementary
school. In 1916 he enrolled at a high school in Surabaya.Soekarno spent in
Surabaya were most important in his future intellectual and political
development. During his life, he has three wives and blessed with eight
children.
The following
year Soekarno entered the Institute of Technology in Bandung, from which he
graduated in 1926 as an engineer. He embarked on a political career, publishing
a series of articles in which he endeavored to reconcile the two contending factions
by trying to show that Islam and communism were not incompatible.
During his life, he
received the title of Doktor Honoris Causa from 26 university and first class
atar award The Order of the Supreme Companions of OR Tambo from President of
South Africa. This is on April 2005, Soekarno had been dead for 35 years
received achievement from President of South Africa, Thabo Mbeki. Another
achievements are Mahaputera Adipurna, Lenin Peace Prize, Philippine Legion of
Honor, and became Hero Proclamation.
After going
through a long struggle of independence, Bung Karno and Bung Hatta proclaimed
Indonesia’s independence on August 17, 1945.On March 12, 1967, Sukarno was
formally ousted from the presidency, and placed under house arrest at the Bogor
Palace. Soekarno died of kidney failure on June 21, 1970 in the Jakarta Army
Hospital. He was 69 years old.
